DCI I Am Not a Paper Cup Review
I bought this cup after working as a chemist in a lab. There, I learned how much plastic can slough off containers and cups, especially at high temperatures. Even though no links have been made between ingesting most plastics at small doses and health, I’d rather not ingest it. The cup is ceramic, a material that does not slough off. The lid is made of silicone, the same thing that covers baby spoons. Unlike the previous reviewer, my cup has a hole on the lid through which you can drink (although it’s more convenient to drink without the lid). I addition, it can contain 12 ounces- the same size as a Tall cup at Starbucks. So go ahead and ask the barista there to make your drink in it.
This cup/mug is exactly what I have been looking for. I love coffee and am somewhat of a mug collector. Until I purchased this mug yesterday, everything has either been a good mug for home or ok for the car but nothing has been good for both. This mug is great all around. Nice lip around the edge when drinking without the lid, white so I can see the quality of coffee (for those that know, you know…), nice heft to it, double walled construction for insulation….perfect!
I was mainly looking for a re-usable mug with a lid that could go in the dishwasher that wasn’t too dorky looking. This fits the bill nicely. It’s actually sort of a conversation-starter, if that appeals to you. Downsides are 1) Capacity – it only holds 8 oz.. and 2) insulating capability is ok but not great… nowhere near a traditional stainless steel insulated travel mug but better than a paper cup. I do like being able to dishwasher it, though. Is that a word?
I have an espresso maker at home and take a caffeine drink to work everyday. This cup has saved me from using 5 paper cups and 5 plastic lids every week. Besides feeling better about my carbon footprint, I also feel better about not having to put a paper cup in the microwave on a daily basis to reheat my drink, which I recently read is a no-no (the wax on the outer layer of the paper cup will melt and fall into coffee unseen — yum). After a couple of months of use the top has started to get a little brown, but it’s all on the inside. The only down side to the product, is it doesn’t hold a lot of liquid. It looks like about a 12 or 14 oz cup from the outside, but it just holds a little bit more than 8 ounces.
My reason for purchasing this item was that no other coffee mugs or cup fit in the cup holders in my car. Because the cup has no handles it fits perfectly in almost every cup holder I’ve seen, although it may be a little heavy for those that pop out or eject from the dash board of your car. I’ve had the cup for about a month now, and I haven’t had any issues. The only real complaint is simply that it stains easily. It’s not that big of a deal (all coffee cups do), and I have since purchased a second one as well. I haven’t had any issues with the lid leaking as some of the others seem to have had.
